Gentle, safe newborn sessions in the first weeks of life

Austin Newborn Photography

Austin is a city that moves fast, but those first few days with a new baby deserve to slow all the way down. At Candid Studios, our Austin newborn sessions are unhurried, gentle, and built entirely around your little one — capturing the details that disappear before you know it, from the curl of tiny fingers to the way afternoon light falls through the windows of your Tarrytown bungalow or South Congress home. With more than 3,000 events captured since 2016, we bring experience, patience, and a deep respect for this moment to every session we photograph.

Newborn Sessions Made for Austin Families

Austin families have a character all their own — creative, laid-back, fiercely proud of their city, and deeply invested in the lives they are building here. Our newborn photography reflects that spirit. Sessions are relaxed and flexible, never rushed, and designed so that feeding breaks, soothing time, and spontaneous sibling moments are all part of the story rather than interruptions to it. We work primarily with natural light, which Austin provides in abundance. Whether you are in a sun-drenched loft near the Mueller development, a craftsman home in Bouldin Creek, or a newer build out in Bee Cave, we read the light in your space and work with it rather than against it. The result is imagery that feels warm, honest, and timeless — a genuine reflection of your family and your home. Sessions are typically scheduled within the first five to fourteen days of life, when babies are at their sleepiest and most pliable. We walk you through every step of the booking process well before your due date so that when baby arrives, all you need to do is send us a message and we will take care of the rest. Final galleries are delivered within two to three weeks and are formatted for both fine-art printing and digital sharing, giving you heirloom-quality images you can display proudly in your Austin home for years to come.

Austin Locations and Settings We Love

One of the most meaningful choices you can make for a newborn session is to have it in your own home. For Austin families, that might mean the airy, high-ceilinged rooms common in Hyde Park historic homes, the open-plan living spaces of modern builds in Steiner Ranch, or the cozy, plant-filled interiors that define so many East Austin residences near Cherrywood and Manor Road. Your home carries the scent, the light, and the feeling of the life you have made — and that context makes images resonate in a way that a generic studio backdrop simply cannot replicate. For families who prefer a dedicated studio environment, downtown Austin and the Domain area offer a number of beautifully appointed spaces we work with regularly, providing a clean, controlled setting with consistent natural light from large north-facing windows — ideal for delicate newborn work regardless of what the Texas weather is doing outside. Austin's surrounding Hill Country landscape also opens possibilities for families interested in a short outdoor lifestyle component to their session. Barton Creek Greenbelt, the trails near Lake Travis, and the rolling cedar-draped hills of Westlake provide breathtaking backdrops for family portraits that complement the intimate indoor newborn images — particularly in the golden-light hours of an Austin morning or late afternoon. Whatever setting feels most like you, we will help you make the most of it. We scout your space in advance and arrive with a clear plan so that the session itself feels effortless.

Planning Your Austin Newborn Session: Timing and the Texas Climate

Austin's climate plays a genuine role in how we plan and approach newborn sessions. Summers here are long and intense, and even a short trip outside with a newborn requires careful timing. For June through September sessions, we strongly recommend in-home or studio settings and schedule around the cooler parts of the day for any outdoor elements. The upside of Austin's famous long summer light is that golden hour stretches well into the evening, giving families with older siblings or a desire for some outdoor lifestyle portraits a beautiful window to work with. Spring and fall are particularly magical times for newborn photography in Austin. The moderate temperatures, blooming wildflowers along roadsides in the Hill Country, and the soft diffused light that characterizes those seasons all contribute to imagery with extraordinary color and warmth. If your due date falls between March and May or September and November, you are in for a treat. Winter sessions in Austin are generally mild compared to much of the country, though cool fronts do move through and can make outdoor time unpredictable. We keep our scheduling flexible and always have a fully realized indoor plan ready so that a surprise norther never derails your session. Regardless of season, we recommend booking your newborn session as soon as you have a confirmed due date — ideally by your third trimester. This ensures we hold your spot and gives us time to connect with you, understand your vision, and prepare everything before your baby makes their Austin debut.

Austin Newborn Photography FAQ

  • We recommend booking during your second or third trimester, well before your due date. Austin has a vibrant and growing community of young families, and newborn session availability fills up quickly — especially in the popular spring and fall months. Booking early locks in your spot and gives us time to plan together so that when your baby arrives, the logistics are already handled.

  • Yes. We serve the full Austin metropolitan area, including neighborhoods within the city proper like Travis Heights, Clarksville, and Allandale, as well as surrounding communities such as Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Bee Cave, Dripping Springs, and Kyle. Travel details and any applicable fees for sessions outside the Austin city limits are discussed transparently during the booking process.

  • The ideal window is within the first five to fourteen days of life. At this stage, babies sleep deeply and curl naturally into the gentle poses that define classic newborn photography. After about three weeks, babies become more alert and interactive, which changes the style of the session. If you are past that early window, do not worry — we can still create beautiful, meaningful images; the approach simply shifts toward more awake and lifestyle-focused portraits.

  • Austin's abundant sunshine is one of the things that makes in-home sessions here so special, but direct harsh sunlight can be challenging for newborn work. When we scout your space, we identify the rooms and windows that provide the softest, most diffused light — often north- or east-facing windows in the morning — and we time the session accordingly. In most Austin homes we photograph in, there is always a beautiful light source to work with; we simply find it and let it do the heavy lifting.

  • For very young newborns in the first two weeks, we keep outdoor time minimal and weather-dependent to protect your baby's comfort and safety. However, for a lifestyle or family portrait segment — especially with older siblings — Austin offers stunning outdoor settings. Barton Creek Greenbelt, Auditorium Shores, the hike-and-bike trail around Lady Bird Lake, and the wildflower-lined back roads of the Hill Country near Wimberley or Marble Falls can all serve as incredible backdrops for the family portrait portion of your session during the right season and time of day.
