Gentle, safe newborn sessions in the first weeks of life

Columbus Newborn Photography

Columbus is a city that takes family seriously — from the close-knit blocks of German Village and Clintonville to the growing neighborhoods of Powell and New Albany, parents here put down roots and celebrate every milestone. Candid Studios brings that same intention to newborn photography, offering unhurried, safe sessions designed entirely around your baby and the season of life your family is stepping into. With more than 3,000 events captured across the country since 2016, our team knows how to create heirloom-quality images that will matter to your family for decades to come.

Newborn Sessions Built Around Your Baby, Not the Clock

A newborn session with Candid Studios is never rushed. Babies set the pace — feeding, settling, and sleeping on their own schedule — and we protect that rhythm from the first minute to the last. Our photographers work in soft, natural light whenever the conditions allow, which means Columbus's famously overcast winter skies and its luminous late-spring mornings both produce beautiful results in different ways. Sessions typically take place within the first ten to fourteen days of life, when newborns are at their most sleepy and curled. We bring a carefully curated set of wraps, props, and posing supports, and every posing technique we use prioritizes your baby's safety above aesthetic preference. A parent or caregiver is present and involved throughout. After your session wraps, our editing team gets to work on delivering a finished gallery of heirloom-quality images within two to three weeks. Every image is color-corrected and refined to reflect the warmth and detail of the real moment — no heavy-handed filters, no artificial looks. Just your family, documented beautifully. We also offer in-home sessions for families who want to capture the lived-in warmth of a nursery in Bexley or a sunlit living room in Worthington. There is something irreplaceable about images made in the actual space where your baby first came home.

Columbus Locations We Love for Newborn and Family Photography

While most newborn sessions take place in your home or our studio, Columbus and its surrounding communities offer a rich variety of outdoor and lifestyle settings for milestone portraits and extended family sessions connected to a newborn arrival. Schiller Park in German Village provides mature tree canopy and open green space that photographs beautifully from early April through October. The riverside paths near Scioto Audubon Metro Park offer a quieter, natural feel with the Columbus skyline as a backdrop option in the distance. Families in the northern suburbs often choose Hoover Reservoir Park in Westerville or Hayden Falls Park on the city's northwest side for sessions that feel genuinely natural rather than staged. In the fall, the tree lines along Olentangy River Road and through Upper Arlington neighborhoods turn into a patchwork of amber and rust that makes for extraordinary light during golden hour. For studio-based sessions, our Columbus-area studio provides a fully climate-controlled environment — an important consideration given Ohio's unpredictable weather. A January session in Columbus can mean single-digit wind chills, and a May morning can surprise you with thunderstorms. The studio ensures your newborn stays warm and comfortable regardless of what is happening outside. If you have a specific Columbus location in mind — a meaningful park, a neighborhood that feels like home, or even a rooftop with a particular view — talk to us. We scout locations thoughtfully and are always happy to work with places that carry personal meaning for your family.

Planning Your Columbus Newborn Session Through Ohio's Seasons

Columbus sits squarely in the middle of the Midwest's four-season rhythm, and that reality shapes how we plan and prepare for every session. Summer sessions benefit from long golden hours that stretch past eight in the evening, giving families maximum flexibility. The humidity can be intense in July and August, but it also produces a lush, saturated quality in outdoor greenery that photographs exceptionally well. Fall is the most-requested season in Central Ohio, and for good reason. The weeks from mid-October through early November bring the kind of warm, diffused light and rich color that Columbus parents consistently describe as their favorite backdrop for portraits. If your due date lands in late summer or early fall, booking your session early is strongly recommended — availability fills quickly during peak foliage weeks. Winter newborn sessions have their own quiet beauty. Columbus winters are cold and often grey, but that overcast sky acts as a giant natural softbox, producing even, flattering light through large windows. In-home and studio sessions during the winter months often result in some of the most intimate, cozy imagery we produce all year. Spring brings fresh greenery to parks like Goodale Park in the Short North and the trails around Hocking Hills for families willing to make the short drive south. We recommend booking two to three months before your due date regardless of season to secure your preferred date and give us time to prepare a session tailored to your family's aesthetic and the character of the season.

Columbus Newborn Photography FAQ

  • We recommend booking during your second trimester, typically around weeks 25 to 30 of your pregnancy. This ensures you have a confirmed spot on our calendar before your due date arrives. Because Columbus falls have especially high demand — families throughout German Village, Dublin, and Gahanna tend to book the October and November calendar quickly — earlier booking is even more important if your due date lands in late summer or early fall. Once your baby arrives, contact us right away so we can confirm your specific session date and schedule you within that ideal first two weeks of life.

  • Yes, we do. In-home sessions are a wonderful option for families who want their images to reflect the actual environment where their baby is growing up. Whether your home is in a quiet Powell neighborhood, a historic bungalow in Clintonville, or a newer build in New Albany, we bring all necessary lighting equipment and props to you. We ask that you have at least one room with a large window that receives good natural light, and we handle everything else. Travel fees may apply depending on your distance from our base location, so please ask about this when booking.

  • Central Ohio weather is notoriously variable. Even in mild months like April and September, temperatures and conditions can shift significantly from one day to the next. For this reason, we never schedule outdoor newborn sessions with a sleeping infant — the risk of temperature change and environmental disruption is simply too great for a baby in the first two weeks of life. Outdoor elements are better suited to toddler siblings, parents, or follow-up milestone sessions. For any outdoor family portraits connected to a newborn arrival, we build in a weather-related reschedule policy so you are never left without options if conditions deteriorate.

  • We set aside two to four hours for most newborn sessions, though we do not hold you to a strict end time. Babies in Columbus or anywhere else operate on their own schedule, and a session that requires an extra feeding, a longer settling period, or a mid-session wardrobe change for a sibling simply takes the time it needs. We build our scheduling around this flexibility intentionally. Rushing a newborn session to fit a tight window is how you end up with a fussy baby and images that do not reflect the calm, beautiful experience a newborn session should be.

  • Absolutely, and we encourage it. Some of the most meaningful images from a newborn session are the ones that show an older sibling's curiosity or a parent's quiet pride. We typically photograph sibling and full-family groupings during the first portion of the session while everyone is at their freshest, then transition to focused newborn-only work once siblings have been released to a caregiver. If you have a well-behaved family pet, let us know in advance so we can plan a short segment with them as well. Columbus families often tell us that the image of an older child meeting the baby for the first time in photographs becomes the one they treasure most.
