Gentle, safe newborn sessions in the first weeks of life
Chicago Newborn Photography
Welcoming a new baby in Chicago is its own kind of magic — from the quiet mornings in Lincoln Park to the golden light that filters through a Wicker Park greystone in late afternoon. At Candid Studios, our newborn photography sessions are built around your baby's pace, your family's comfort, and the timeless images you'll pass down for generations. With more than 3,000 events captured since 2016, we bring calm, practiced expertise to every session, right here in the city you call home.
A Session Designed Around Your New Baby
Newborns set the schedule, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Our sessions are unhurried by design — we allow plenty of time for feeding breaks, soothing moments, and the natural pauses that come with a baby who is only days or weeks old. We work in soft, natural light whenever the space allows, which gives your images a warmth and authenticity that studio strobes simply can't replicate. Safety is the foundation of everything we do. Every posing technique we use is baby-led, meaning we never force a position or rush a transition. A parent or caregiver is present and involved throughout the entire session, and we keep the environment warm and calm so your little one stays comfortable from start to finish. Your finished gallery is delivered within two to three weeks of your session date, carefully edited and ready to print, frame, or turn into the heirloom album you've been imagining since the day you found out you were expecting.
Chicago Locations and the Light That Makes Them Special
Chicago's architectural beauty and its wealth of green space give families genuinely stunning backdrops — even within a cozy home session. Many of our Chicago clients choose to shoot in their own residences in neighborhoods like Roscoe Village, Logan Square, or Andersonville, where vintage woodwork, original hardwood floors, and large bay windows create a naturally beautiful setting that no rented studio could imitate. There is something deeply personal about photographing a new baby in the home where they will actually grow up. For families who prefer an outdoor element once baby is a bit older, or who want lifestyle images that capture Chicago's personality, spots like the North Pond area inside Lincoln Park, the shaded paths along the 606 Trail, and the lakefront near Montrose Beach offer beautiful natural light and a distinctly Chicago character without the chaos of a crowded tourist corridor. Chicago's seasons shape the mood of every session. Winter sessions inside a Bucktown loft carry a warm, intimate atmosphere with muted gray light that photographs beautifully. Spring and early summer bring that soft golden quality through neighborhood tree canopies that Chicago does better than almost any other American city. We work with the season you're in rather than against it, and the results reflect an honest slice of Chicago life at the exact moment your family grew.
Planning Your Chicago Newborn Session
The ideal window for newborn photography is within the first ten to fourteen days after birth, when babies are still in that deeply sleepy, curled stage that allows for the most gentle and expressive poses. We strongly recommend booking your session during your third trimester — many Chicago families reserve their date as early as week twenty-eight to ensure availability around their due date. Chicago winters are real, and we plan for them. If your due date falls between November and February, we'll talk through logistics for keeping travel minimal and making sure your home or our studio space is warm enough to keep baby comfortable throughout. Conversely, Chicago summers can bring bright, high-contrast light that we'll account for when planning your session time of day to ensure soft, flattering results no matter what the lakefront weather is doing. Once you book, we'll connect with you ahead of your session to go over wardrobe suggestions, props if you'd like them, and any specific requests you have in mind. The goal is for you to walk away feeling like the session was made entirely for your family — because it was.

Chicago Newborn Photography FAQ
We recommend booking during your third trimester, ideally around weeks twenty-eight to thirty-two of your pregnancy. Chicago is a busy market and weekend dates in particular tend to fill up quickly, especially in spring and fall. Booking early secures your spot and gives us time to plan the session around your due date so we're ready to schedule the actual shoot within that ideal first two-week window after your baby arrives.
Yes. We serve families throughout Chicago's neighborhoods — from the North Shore communities like Evanston and Wilmette to South Side neighborhoods and the western suburbs including Oak Park and Naperville. In-home sessions are actually one of our most popular formats in the Chicago area because the architecture and light in so many Chicago homes and apartments is genuinely beautiful. We'll discuss travel logistics when you reach out so there are no surprises.
The most important thing is identifying the room in your home with the most natural light — often a living room or master bedroom with windows that face east or north. Chicago's greystone and two-flat layouts often have wonderful large windows that we can work with beautifully. Beyond that, we suggest keeping surfaces relatively clear and having a neutral or white swaddle or two on hand. We'll walk you through everything in detail during our pre-session consultation so you feel completely prepared.
Chicago's climate is genuinely one of the most variable in the country, and we factor that into every session. In winter months, in-home sessions are often the warmest and most practical choice, both literally and emotionally — there's a coziness to a January session inside a heated Lincoln Square bungalow that outdoor images simply can't match. In warmer months, we may incorporate a quick outdoor lifestyle segment near a local park or along a tree-lined street if the family is interested and baby is old enough. We always tailor the approach to the season and to your comfort.
Your final edited gallery is delivered within two to three weeks of your session date through a private online gallery that makes it easy to download, share with family, and order prints directly. We know grandparents in Naperville and aunts on the North Shore are eager to see the images, and the gallery format makes sharing simple. If you're interested in printed products like albums or wall art, we'll talk through those options as well — because truly great newborn images deserve to live somewhere other than a phone camera roll.
