Chicago Aerial Photography
From the glittering shoreline of Lake Michigan to the dense skyline of the Loop, Chicago offers some of the most visually compelling aerial perspectives in the country — and Candid Studios has the equipment, certifications, and local knowledge to capture every one of them. Since 2016, our FAA-certified drone pilots have helped real estate developers, event planners, construction firms, and commercial brands tell their stories from above. With 3,000+ events captured nationwide, we bring a level of planning and professionalism to every Chicago flight that produces images you can use the same week they're shot.
Aerial Photography Built for Chicago's Scale and Complexity
Chicago is not a simple city to photograph from the air. Between Class B airspace managed by O'Hare and Midway, restricted corridors near Meigs Field's former footprint, and the dense urban core that runs from Streeterville down through the South Loop, every flight requires careful pre-authorization and airspace coordination. Our team handles all FAA airspace authorization requests so you never have to navigate LAANC approvals or Part 107 requirements on your own. We fly DJI enterprise-grade drones equipped with 1-inch sensors and mechanical shutters, which means we can deliver sharp, color-accurate images even on those brilliantly bright Chicago summer days when the lake reflection would otherwise blow out a lesser camera. We adapt our altitude and flight path to match your specific deliverables, whether that means a tight overhead grid of a Lincoln Park rooftop or a wide sweeping arc above a multi-acre development site in Fulton Market. Every engagement includes pre-flight planning, liability insurance documentation provided directly to your venue or property manager, and professionally edited images delivered within 48 hours. Chicago moves fast, and so do we.
Chicago Neighborhoods, Venues, and Properties We Frequently Photograph
The variety of work we take on across Chicago reflects how diverse the city itself is. In the West Loop and Fulton Market, we regularly document commercial construction progress for developers bringing new mixed-use buildings online — a market that has seen enormous activity over the past several years. Overhead shots taken at consistent intervals give project owners a reliable visual record that written reports simply cannot replicate. For event venues, aerial photography is especially powerful when the setting is as dramatic as Chicago allows. Rooftop venues along Michigan Avenue, sprawling tent events at Soldier Field's surrounding plazas, outdoor celebrations at Millennium Park, and waterfront gatherings near Navy Pier all benefit from overhead angles that show guests, décor, and the city skyline all in a single frame. The combination of architectural density and open lakefront is something you only find in Chicago, and it makes for extraordinary marketing content. We also work extensively with real estate clients across neighborhoods like Lincoln Square, Wicker Park, Pilsen, Hyde Park, and the North Shore suburbs for luxury residential listings. Large properties, estate homes, and mixed-use developments photograph far more effectively from above than from street level alone. For resort and hospitality clients, we have photographed properties along the lakefront and in the greater Chicagoland area where showcasing acreage and amenity layouts requires an aerial perspective. If your property or event has a Chicago address, our pilots know the local airspace and can plan a flight path that makes the most of what this city uniquely offers.
Seasonal Considerations for Aerial Photography in Chicago
Chicago's weather is not subtle, and it matters a great deal for aerial work. The city's most photogenic window for outdoor drone flights typically runs from late April through October, when consistent daylight, manageable wind speeds, and green tree canopies along boulevards like Lake Shore Drive make conditions ideal. The golden-hour light over Lake Michigan in summer produces color gradients that are hard to replicate in any other season or setting. That said, Chicago winter has its own aerial appeal. A fresh snow covering across Grant Park or Millennium Park, or ice formations along the lakefront piers, can produce striking commercial and editorial imagery for clients willing to work in colder conditions. Our drones and our pilots are equipped for cold-weather operations, though we monitor wind chill and gusting conditions carefully — Chicago's wind is earned its reputation, and we never compromise a flight for the sake of a schedule. Spring and fall bring their own considerations. Spring flooding along the Chicago River and its tributaries makes for compelling construction documentation imagery, while autumn canopy color in neighborhoods like Beverly, Ravenswood, and along the North Shore creates natural depth and warmth in overhead shots that summer greenery doesn't always provide. We work with you to choose a flight window that aligns both with your project timeline and the seasonal conditions most likely to produce the results you need.

Chicago Aerial Photographer FAQ
Yes, though it requires proper FAA authorization. Downtown Chicago and areas near the lakefront fall within Class B airspace controlled by Chicago O'Hare and Chicago Midway approach corridors. Our pilots are FAA Part 107 certified and use the LAANC system to obtain real-time airspace authorizations before every flight in controlled airspace. For certain locations — such as areas near Soldier Field, Navy Pier, or directly adjacent to active flight paths — we also coordinate directly with the relevant authorities to ensure full compliance. You don't need to handle any of that yourself; we manage the entire process.
Yes. Every Candid Studios drone pilot holds an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, which is the federal requirement for commercial drone operations anywhere in the United States, including Illinois. This certification covers knowledge of airspace regulations, weather conditions, emergency procedures, and flight planning. We also carry liability insurance and provide documentation directly to your venue, property manager, or event coordinator in Chicago before the flight takes place.
We work across a wide range of project types in and around Chicago. Real estate photography for residential and commercial listings is one of our most common services, particularly for larger properties in neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, Hyde Park, and across the North Shore suburbs. We also handle construction progress documentation for development projects in the West Loop, Fulton Market, and South Loop corridors. Event and venue photography — including rooftop venues, lakefront gatherings, and large outdoor celebrations — is another core area. Commercial and hospitality clients use our aerial imagery for marketing campaigns, site surveys, and property presentations.
We fly DJI enterprise-grade drones with 1-inch sensors and mechanical shutters, which produce high-resolution images capable of significant cropping without losing detail — important for large property overviews where you may need to isolate specific sections. Final edited images are delivered through a private online gallery within 48 hours of the flight. Your gallery includes a full print release, so you can use the images for listings, marketing materials, presentations, or publications without restriction.
Weather is one of the most important variables we account for when planning a Chicago aerial shoot. We monitor wind speeds, precipitation forecasts, and cloud cover carefully in the days leading up to your scheduled flight. Chicago's lakefront winds can occasionally require us to reschedule, and we always prioritize safe operating conditions over sticking to a calendar. The good news is that Chicago's peak shooting season from late spring through fall offers many excellent weather windows, and we work with you to identify backup dates so your project stays on track even if conditions on the original day aren't ideal.
