Chicago Family Portrait Photography

Chicago is a city that lives outdoors — along the lakefront, through the neighborhood streets, under the El tracks, and inside the parks that anchor every community from Lincoln Square to Hyde Park. Candid Studios brings family portrait photography to all of it, capturing the warmth, humor, and genuine connection that make your family yours against a backdrop that's unmistakably Chicago. Since 2016, our team has photographed more than 3,000 events across the country, and we know how to make a session feel less like a photo shoot and more like a great afternoon together.

Sessions Built Around How Your Family Actually Lives

Every family portrait session with Candid Studios runs 45 to 90 minutes and is designed around real life, not a posed version of it. We use a relaxed, play-based approach that keeps kids moving, laughing, and being themselves rather than standing stiff and waiting for someone to say cheese. That means we're chasing your toddler through the grass, catching the way your teenager rolls their eyes and then cracks a smile, and finding the quiet moments between the loud ones. We capture a full mix throughout every session — traditional group portraits, candid interactions between family members, and individual shots that show each person as their own. The result is a gallery that feels like your family, not a catalog image of one. Every package includes 40 to 75 professionally retouched images delivered in a private online gallery with digital downloads and a full print release, so you can order prints, canvas wraps, or holiday cards anywhere you choose. We also provide wardrobe coordination guidance before your session and always build in buffer time for snack breaks, outfit changes, and the inevitable toddler negotiations that are just part of the process.

The Best Spots in Chicago for Family Portraits

Chicago gives families an extraordinary range of backdrops, and choosing the right location makes a real difference in the feel of your gallery. Lincoln Park is one of our most requested settings — the open lawns near the North Pond, the tree-lined paths around the conservatory, and the views toward the skyline offer something for every family's style, whether you want lush green surroundings or a bit of urban character in the frame. For families who want the lake in their photos, the North Avenue Beach stretch and the Montrose Beach area offer wide-open light and that distinctive Lake Michigan horizon. Millennium Park works beautifully for families who want an iconic Chicago feel, with the Cloud Gate providing a playful and immediately recognizable element — especially popular for sessions that lean into the city's energy. The 606 Trail is another favorite for families who live on the Northwest Side and want something that reflects their actual neighborhood rather than a generic park. If you're drawn to neighborhood character, Wicker Park and Bucktown deliver tree-shaded sidewalks, colorful murals, and architectural detail that photograph beautifully. Hyde Park, with its University of Chicago courtyards and the paths around the Museum of Science and Industry, suits families in the South Side who want surroundings that feel both grand and familiar. We're also happy to photograph sessions in your home — especially for families with newborns or very young children who do best in a comfortable, known environment. We always recommend scheduling your session during golden hour — roughly the 60 to 90 minutes before sunset — when Chicago's light goes soft and warm and the city looks its absolute best. For lakefront sessions in particular, the late-afternoon sun coming off the water creates a quality of light that's hard to replicate at any other time of day.

Planning Around Chicago's Seasons

Chicago's climate means the season you choose shapes the entire look and feel of your session, and each one has something real to offer. Fall is consistently our most requested time of year — the maples along the lakefront paths and through neighborhoods like Beverly and Andersonville turn deep amber and red typically from mid-October into early November, and the air is cool enough that everyone is comfortable and nobody is squinting. It's the season that books fastest, so we encourage families thinking about fall portraits to reach out early. Spring sessions — particularly from late April through June — bring blooming cherry trees to spots like the Japanese Garden in Jackson Park and the paths around the Chicago Botanic Garden in nearby Glencoe, offering a softness and color that's hard to find in any other season. Summer works well for active families and beach sessions, though we pay close attention to scheduling around Chicago's heat and humidity and almost always lean toward evening golden-hour timing to keep everyone comfortable. Winter portrait sessions in the city have their own quiet drama — bare branches, occasional snow along the lakefront, and the warm glow of holiday lights in neighborhoods like the Magnificent Mile corridor — and they're genuinely beautiful when the timing comes together. Whatever season you're planning for, we'll talk through your options and help you pick a date, time, and location that gives your family the best possible conditions. Chicago rewards a little planning, and we're here to help you navigate it.

Chicago Family Portrait Photography FAQ

  • Every session includes professional photographer coverage for 45 to 90 minutes, expert post-processing and retouching, and delivery of 40 to 75 finished images in a private online gallery. You'll receive full digital download rights and a print release for all images, along with wardrobe coordination guidance before your session day. We also build buffer time into every appointment for outfit changes, snack breaks, and anything else that comes up — because with families, something always does.

  • Sessions take place at a location of your choosing anywhere in the Chicago area. Popular options include Lincoln Park, Millennium Park, the North Avenue and Montrose Beach areas along Lake Michigan, the 606 Trail, Wicker Park, Hyde Park, and neighborhood streets throughout the city. We also photograph sessions in family homes, which works especially well for newborns and very young children. If you're not sure where to shoot, we're happy to make a recommendation based on your family's style and where you live in the city.

  • We don't ask kids to stand still and smile, because that rarely works and it makes everyone tense. Instead, we use a play-based approach — we give kids things to do, follow their energy rather than fighting it, and let the best moments happen naturally. Some of our favorite images from family sessions are the ones nobody was posing for. We also plan sessions with enough time built in so that if a toddler needs a snack break or a few minutes to warm up to a stranger with a camera, that time exists without cutting into the session.

  • We provide wardrobe coordination guidance as part of every session. In general, we suggest coordinating colors rather than matching outfits exactly — think of a color palette rather than identical outfits. Neutral tones, soft blues, greens, and warm earthy colors tend to photograph well in Chicago's parks and lakefront settings. If you're shooting in the fall, earthy tones complement the foliage beautifully; for a summer lakefront session, lighter layers and relaxed fits tend to work well. Chicago weather can shift, so we always recommend bringing an extra layer, especially for morning or evening sessions near the lake.

  • Fall — roughly mid-October through early November — is our most popular season, thanks to the foliage color and comfortable temperatures. Spring sessions from late April through June offer blooming landscapes and beautiful soft light. Summer works well for beach and lakefront sessions when scheduled at golden hour to avoid the midday heat and harsh light. Winter sessions have their own appeal, particularly around the holiday season when the city's light displays and bare-branched parks create a striking, quieter aesthetic. We encourage families interested in fall sessions to book well in advance, as that window fills quickly each year.
