We strongly recommend the hour before sunset for summer shoots — the light off Lake Michigan at that time of day is genuinely unlike anything else in the Midwest. Fall is Chicago's most popular family photography season, and for good reason. The maples and oaks in Lincoln Park, Humboldt Park, and along most of the city's residential boulevards turn rich copper and gold from mid-October through early November, creating a warmth that pairs beautifully with the city's architecture. We use a play-based approach that works with kids' energy rather than against it. Instead of asking children to stand still and smile, we direct them through movement — running toward a parent, exploring a path in Lincoln Park, or playing a quick game — and capture the real expressions that come out of those moments. We also build buffer time into every session for snack breaks, outfit changes, and the occasional toddler negotiation. Most kids loosen up within the first ten to fifteen minutes once they realize there is no pressure to perform.
We recommend coordinating colors rather than matching outfits exactly — think a palette of two or three complementary tones that feel natural together.
