Chicago Family Photography

Chicago is a city that lives out loud — on the lakefront, in its neighborhood block parties, along the riverwalk, and underneath the rumbling L tracks — and your family portraits should reflect that same energy. Candid Studios brings a relaxed, real-life approach to family photography that captures who you actually are, not a stiff version of you arranged in matching khakis. With 3,000+ events captured since 2016, we know how to work with the full spectrum of Chicago weather, light, and personality to create images your family will genuinely love.

Family Sessions Built Around Real Life

A Candid Studios family session is designed to feel less like a photo shoot and more like an afternoon you just happened to document. Sessions run 45 to 90 minutes at a location you choose, and we spend that time moving, playing, and interacting rather than lining everyone up and counting to three. We mix traditional group portraits with candid moments — a toddler chasing a sibling, a grandparent mid-laugh, the quiet in-between seconds that actually tell the story of your family. Every package includes 40 to 75 professionally retouched images delivered in a private online gallery with full digital downloads and a print release, so you own your photos outright. We also provide wardrobe coordination guidance before your session to help everyone look cohesive without looking costumed. And because real life involves snacks and opinion changes and toddlers who need a moment, we always build buffer time into the session so nothing feels rushed. Families of every size and configuration are welcome — newborns meeting siblings for the first time, multigenerational gatherings with grandparents in from out of town, blended families, chosen families, and everyone in between. If your family is real, we want to photograph it.

The Best Places in Chicago for Family Photos

Chicago offers an extraordinary range of backdrops, and part of our job is helping you choose a location that actually suits your family rather than just defaulting to wherever looks pretty on Instagram. Lincoln Park is a perennial favorite for good reason — the South Pond Refectory, the tree-lined paths near the zoo, and the open meadows near Fullerton give you variety within a single outing. Millennium Park works beautifully in early morning before the crowds arrive, with the Bean and the Pritzker Pavilion lending that unmistakably Chicago skyline energy. For families who want something more neighborhood-flavored, we love shooting in Wicker Park and Bucktown, where the street art, greystone architecture, and tree-canopied sidewalks create a texture you simply cannot replicate anywhere else. The 606 Trail is another standout — especially in fall, when the elevated greenway turns amber and gold above the rooftops. Logan Square's boulevard medians offer wide, open light and gorgeous elm trees that anchor portraits beautifully. If you are closer to the South Side, the lakefront paths near Hyde Park and the Museum of Science and Industry provide a quieter, more expansive feel. Northerly Island gives families open prairie grass and an unobstructed view of the skyline. And for families who want the comfort of home, in-home sessions in your own space — whether that is a Pilsen loft or a Lincoln Square bungalow — are always an option and often produce the most emotionally resonant images of all.

Shooting in Chicago: Seasons, Light, and What to Expect

Chicago's climate is genuinely dramatic, and knowing how to work with it rather than against it is something we have spent years learning. Summer sessions along the lakefront are stunning but require an early-morning or golden-hour start to avoid harsh midday light and the heat that turns everyone cranky. We strongly recommend the hour before sunset for summer shoots — the light off Lake Michigan at that time of day is genuinely unlike anything else in the Midwest. Fall is Chicago's most popular family photography season, and for good reason. The maples and oaks in Lincoln Park, Humboldt Park, and along most of the city's residential boulevards turn rich copper and gold from mid-October through early November, creating a warmth that pairs beautifully with the city's architecture. If you are hoping for peak fall color, we recommend scheduling in mid-October and booking as early as possible since those weeks fill quickly. Winter sessions in Chicago are not for the faint of heart, but they produce genuinely memorable images — snow along the lakefront, holiday lights in the Loop and on the Magnificent Mile, and a quieter, more intimate quality to the city's streets. Spring arrives later than most of the country, but when the cherry blossoms bloom in Lincoln Park's formal garden and the city shakes off its grey, the light is soft and gorgeous. Whatever season you choose, we will help you plan the session to make the most of it.

Chicago Family Photography FAQ

  • Every family session includes professional coverage for 45 to 90 minutes, expert post-production editing, and a private online gallery with 40 to 75 retouched images. Your gallery comes with full digital downloads and a print release, meaning you can print your photos anywhere you like without restriction. We also provide pre-session wardrobe coordination guidance and full support from booking through gallery delivery.

  • We use a play-based approach that works with kids' energy rather than against it. Instead of asking children to stand still and smile, we direct them through movement — running toward a parent, exploring a path in Lincoln Park, or playing a quick game — and capture the real expressions that come out of those moments. We also build buffer time into every session for snack breaks, outfit changes, and the occasional toddler negotiation. Most kids loosen up within the first ten to fifteen minutes once they realize there is no pressure to perform.

  • We recommend coordinating colors rather than matching outfits exactly — think a palette of two or three complementary tones that feel natural together. Earthy neutrals, muted blues, and soft warms all photograph beautifully against Chicago's mix of greenery, brick, and water. If you are shooting in fall, warmer tones echo the season without looking costumey. We send all our clients a wardrobe guide before their session and are happy to give feedback on specific outfit combinations if you share photos with us ahead of time. Also keep Chicago's weather in mind — layering is always smart, and comfortable shoes matter for walking sessions.

  • Sessions take place at a location of your choosing. Popular options include Lincoln Park, Millennium Park, the 606 Trail, Logan Square's boulevard medians, the lakefront path, and neighborhood streets throughout Wicker Park, Bucktown, Pilsen, Hyde Park, and beyond. We are also happy to do in-home sessions if you want something more intimate. When you book, we will talk through your options and help you choose a spot that suits your family's style and your preferred session time.

  • Golden hour sessions are recommended year-round for the most flattering natural light — in summer that means the hour before sunset, and in fall the light softens earlier in the evening. Fall is the most popular season, particularly mid-October when the tree color in Lincoln Park and along the city's residential boulevards peaks. That window books up quickly, so we recommend reserving your spot several weeks in advance. Spring sessions in April and May offer soft light and blooming trees once the weather stabilizes, and winter sessions can be beautiful for families willing to embrace the lakefront cold and the city's holiday atmosphere.
