Elegant maternity portraits that celebrate this chapter
Chicago Maternity Photography
Chicago is one of the most visually stunning cities in the country, and there is no better time to have your portrait taken against its backdrop than when you are expecting. At Candid Studios, we specialize in relaxed, genuine maternity sessions that celebrate the connection between you and your growing family — whether that means the golden-hour glow along the lakefront, the lush greenery of a North Side park, or the warmth of your own home. With more than 3,000 events captured since 2016, our photographers know how to find the light, set you at ease, and deliver images you will treasure for a lifetime.
Maternity Sessions Made for Chicago Families
Pregnancy is one of the most fleeting and meaningful chapters of your life, and we treat every session with the care that moment deserves. Our approach is unhurried and unscripted — we guide you gently through poses that feel natural rather than stiff, so the images reflect genuine emotion rather than a posed performance. Whether you are welcoming your first child or expanding a family that is already full of personality, we tailor every session to you. Chicago families come to us from all over the city and the surrounding suburbs — from Lincoln Park and Wicker Park to Oak Park and Evanston — and we love getting to know the neighborhoods and rhythms that shape each family's story. That local knowledge means we can suggest timing and settings that work specifically for your vision and your schedule, not a one-size-fits-all package. We also understand that Chicago winters are real, and that many expecting mothers prefer the comfort of an indoor or in-home session between November and March. Our photographers are equally skilled in natural light indoors, using window light and warm ambient sources to create images that are just as beautiful as any outdoor setting. No matter the season, your session will be handled with creativity and intention.
Beautiful Chicago Locations for Your Maternity Session
Chicago offers an extraordinary variety of backdrops for maternity photography, and choosing the right location makes all the difference. Lincoln Park is one of the most beloved spots in the city — its tree-lined paths, the quiet coves near the North Pond, and the open meadows near Fullerton Avenue provide a lush, natural feel that photographs beautifully in every season. In autumn, the color along the park's interior trails is genuinely spectacular. The 606 Trail in Bucktown and Wicker Park has become a favorite for families who want something with a hint of urban character — exposed brick, industrial textures, and pocket gardens create a layered aesthetic that feels distinctly Chicago. For a more sweeping, architectural feel, the lakefront path near Montrose Beach or Promontory Point in Hyde Park delivers that unmistakable combination of open sky, water, and city skyline that you simply cannot find anywhere else. Botanic Garden sessions at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe offer lush, manicured settings just north of the city that feel worlds away from the urban bustle — an ideal choice for spring and early summer sessions. Millennium Park, with its iconic reflective skyline views near Cloud Gate, works beautifully for families who want an unmistakably Chicago landmark woven into their portraits. If you have a favorite neighborhood coffee shop, a sunlit apartment, or a home with a garden you love, we are equally enthusiastic about in-home or hyper-local sessions. The best location is often the one that already holds meaning for your family.
Planning Your Chicago Maternity Session by Season
Chicago's seasons are dramatic and distinct, and each one creates a different kind of beauty for maternity photography. Spring sessions — particularly from late April through June — benefit from blooming cherry trees and fresh green foliage, especially in parks like Grant Park and along the lakefront. The light during this time is soft and even, and temperatures are gentle enough for flowing dresses and outdoor comfort. Summer in Chicago is warm and golden, with long evenings that make the hour before sunset particularly magical near the lake. If you are due in late summer or fall, scheduling your session between weeks 28 and 34 of your pregnancy during the long July or August evenings can yield stunning results. Keep in mind that Chicago lakefront breezes can be strong even on warm days, so layers and a flexible wardrobe plan are always smart. Fall is arguably the most popular season for outdoor maternity sessions in Chicago. The canopy in Lincoln Park and Humboldt Park turns amber and rust from mid-October onward, and the softer autumn light is extraordinarily flattering. We recommend booking fall sessions early, as availability fills quickly between September and November. For winter sessions, Chicago's snowfall can create genuinely magical imagery — a quiet morning after a fresh snow in one of the city's parks has a stillness and beauty that is hard to replicate. We are experienced with cold-weather sessions and will always keep your comfort and safety the top priority, keeping outdoor exposure brief and pairing it with warm indoor segments whenever needed.

Chicago Maternity Photography FAQ
Most photographers recommend scheduling your maternity session between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your belly is beautifully round and photogenic, and you are still comfortable enough to move around a park or location with ease. If you are planning an outdoor session in Chicago and your due date falls in winter, booking earlier in your third trimester gives you more flexibility to take advantage of any mild weather windows before temperatures drop significantly.
We have photographed maternity sessions across the city and have particular favorites depending on your aesthetic preferences. Lincoln Park near the North Pond and Fullerton Pavilion area is gorgeous for a lush, natural look. Promontory Point in Hyde Park offers a stunning lakefront backdrop with the downtown skyline in the distance. The 606 Trail is ideal for couples who want a more urban, textured feel. The Chicago Botanic Garden in nearby Glencoe is a wonderful option for spring and summer sessions if you want something more garden-like and serene. We are always happy to discuss your vision and match you with the perfect spot.
Chicago weather is famously unpredictable, and we take that seriously. If conditions on your session day are unsafe or unflattering — heavy rain, extreme cold, or severe wind — we will work with you to reschedule at no penalty, or pivot to a beautiful indoor or in-home session instead. We monitor forecasts closely leading up to your date and will be in touch proactively if we anticipate any issues. Many of our favorite maternity images have actually been captured during overcast Chicago days, when the diffused light is incredibly soft and flattering.
Absolutely, and in-home sessions are genuinely one of our favorite formats for maternity photography. A sun-filled living room, a nursery in progress, or a kitchen where your family gathers tells a more personal story than any park backdrop can. Chicago apartments — from airy Lincoln Square flats to brick-walled Pilsen lofts — often have wonderful natural light and interesting architectural character that translates beautifully on camera. During your pre-session consultation we will discuss your space and help you prepare it for the best possible results.
We recommend booking as soon as you know your due date and have a rough sense of your preferred timing, ideally around the start of your second trimester. This is especially important if you are hoping for a fall outdoor session, which is our most in-demand period in Chicago due to the beautiful foliage and comfortable temperatures. Booking early gives you the widest choice of dates and allows time for a relaxed planning conversation before your session day arrives.
