New York Family Portrait Photography
New York City is one of the most visually dynamic places on earth to photograph a family — from the sun-drenched meadows of Central Park to the cobblestone streets of DUMBO with the Manhattan Bridge looming overhead. Candid Studios has been capturing families across New York since 2016, part of more than 3,000 events we've documented nationwide. Whether your family is rooted in Brooklyn brownstones, Queens neighborhoods full of character, or the energy of Midtown, we bring a relaxed, play-based approach that lets your real story come through — no forced smiles, no stiff lineups, just the way your family actually is.
New York Locations We Love for Family Sessions
Central Park is the obvious choice for good reason — its 843 acres give us endless variety within a single session. Depending on the season, we can work the Bow Bridge for a classic Manhattan skyline reflection, the open meadows near Sheep Meadow for wide golden-hour light, or the quieter wooded paths of the North Woods when you want something that feels a world away from the city. Every corner of the park offers something different, and we know how to move through it efficiently while keeping kids engaged. Brooklyn offers some of the most photographically rich backdrops in the entire city. DUMBO's water-front plaza and archways beneath the Manhattan Bridge are iconic for a reason, but we also love Prospect Park for families who want a greener, more relaxed atmosphere — similar energy to Central Park without the midtown crowds. Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1 gives you sweeping views of Lower Manhattan and the East River, and it photographs beautifully at golden hour when the bridges are lit and the skyline is warm. For families in the outer boroughs, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens is an underrated gem — wide open lawns, the Unisphere as a dramatic backdrop, and far less foot traffic than Manhattan parks on weekends. Staten Island's Snug Harbor Cultural Botanical Garden offers manicured grounds and historic architecture that feel almost European. And for families based in the Bronx, the New York Botanical Garden and Pelham Bay Park both provide lush, natural settings that photograph beautifully across every season. We are also happy to photograph your family at home. A Brooklyn brownstone stoop, a light-filled apartment in the West Village, or a backyard in Riverdale — these personal spaces often produce the most emotionally resonant images because they are already part of your family's story.
Navigating New York Seasons for Your Family Session
New York's seasons are dramatic and genuinely shape what a family session looks and feels like. Fall is our most requested time of year, and for good reason — Central Park, Prospect Park, and Riverside Park all turn into a cascade of amber, orange, and gold from mid-October through early November. The light at golden hour in autumn is particularly warm and flattering, and the cooler temperatures keep everyone comfortable and cooperative, kids included. Spring runs a close second. Cherry blossoms peak in late March through mid-April across the city — the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the path along the East Drive in Central Park are two standout spots. The soft pink blooms create a naturally beautiful and distinctly New York backdrop that families love year after year. Summer sessions work best early in the morning or in the final 90 minutes before sunset. Midday heat in July and August can make a session feel like a challenge with young children, so we plan around it. The beach is a strong summer option — the Rockaways, Brighton Beach, or Jones Beach all offer that classic New York coastal feel without leaving the metro area. Winter sessions have their own quiet magic: bare-branched trees, crisp light, and far fewer crowds in the parks, and if there is fresh snow on the ground, Central Park becomes almost impossibly beautiful. No matter the season, we always recommend scheduling at least a few weeks in advance and identifying a rain backup date. New York weather can shift quickly, and having a plan in place means your session happens on the best possible day rather than the next available one.
What to Expect from Your Candid Studios Family Session
Every family session runs 45 to 90 minutes and is built around how your family actually moves through the world — not a rigid shot list. We typically capture a mix of traditional group portraits, candid moments between siblings, individual shots of each family member, and the in-between seconds that are often the most meaningful. We have been doing this since 2016, and we have learned that the best images almost always come when everyone forgets the camera is there. Before your session, we provide wardrobe coordination guidance to help your family look cohesive without looking costume-y. We give specific, practical advice tailored to your chosen location — what works on the Brooklyn Bridge waterfront is different from what works in a sun-drenched Prospect Park meadow. We will talk through colors, layers, and what to avoid so nobody shows up in something that photographs awkwardly or clashes with the environment. We always build buffer time into the schedule for snack breaks, outfit adjustments, and the inevitable toddler negotiations that are just part of the deal when young children are involved. We are not in a rush. Our approach with kids is play-based — we engage them with games, movement, and silliness rather than asking them to stand still and smile. Parents consistently tell us this is the part that surprises them most: how natural and easy the session ends up feeling. After the session, every image goes through professional retouching before delivery. You receive 40 to 75 finished photographs in a private online gallery with full digital downloads and a print release, so you can print anywhere you choose — from a local print shop in your neighborhood to a large-format canvas for your living room wall.

New York Family Portrait Photography FAQ
Central Park and Prospect Park are our two most popular locations, and both offer enormous variety within a single session. DUMBO in Brooklyn is a close third for families who want an urban, architectural feel with the Manhattan Bridge and East River as backdrops. That said, we photograph all over the city and the outer boroughs — from Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx to Snug Harbor on Staten Island — and we are always happy to discuss which location best fits your family's style and where you live.
For personal family portrait sessions with a single photographer, permits are generally not required in most New York City parks, including Central Park and Prospect Park. We stay up to date on current park guidelines and will advise you on any specific considerations for your chosen location before your session date.
We provide personalized wardrobe guidance before every session, but the general approach is coordinated rather than matching — think complementary colors and tones rather than identical outfits. For fall sessions in Central Park, warmer earth tones and layers photograph beautifully. For a DUMBO or Brooklyn Bridge Park session, a slightly more polished, put-together look tends to work well against the architectural backdrop. We will give you specific advice based on your exact location and the season so everyone looks intentional and natural at the same time.
We plan for it from the start. Our sessions include buffer time for snack breaks, short rest moments, and the natural unpredictability that comes with young kids. In a city environment, we are strategic about timing and positioning to minimize distractions and crowds — early morning slots and golden hour sessions tend to be quieter in the parks and give us more space to work. Our approach with toddlers and young children is play-based: we get them moving, laughing, and interacting with each other rather than asking them to pose, which produces far more genuine expressions and keeps the energy light.
Fall is our most popular season by a significant margin — the foliage in Central Park, Prospect Park, and Riverside Park is stunning from mid-October through early November, and the golden-hour light is exceptional. Spring is a close second, especially if cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden or along Central Park's East Drive are on your wish list, which means booking in March for a late March or early April session. Summer sessions work well when scheduled at golden hour to avoid the midday heat. Winter has a quiet beauty of its own, with emptier parks and the possibility of a snow-dusted session that is uniquely New York. We recommend booking four to six weeks in advance for any season, and further ahead for fall when demand is highest.
