New York Family Photography
New York City is a city that moves fast, and your family is growing just as quickly. Candid Studios brings a relaxed, play-based approach to family photography that fits right into the rhythm of New York life — whether you're raising kids in Brooklyn, settling into a Queens neighborhood, or exploring the parks and waterfronts that make this city unlike anywhere else. With 3,000+ events captured since 2016, our photographers know how to find beauty in the real, unscripted moments that define your family.
Where We Shoot: New York's Best Family Photography Locations
New York City offers an almost overwhelming range of backdrops for family portraits, and part of what makes a Candid Studios session special is working with you to choose a location that actually reflects who you are. Prospect Park in Brooklyn is one of our most-requested spots — its rolling meadows, wooded paths, and the beautiful Boathouse area give families room to explore while we capture candid moments along the way. Central Park is equally stunning and endlessly versatile, from the rustic stone bridges near the Ramble to the open, tree-lined Mall that floods with golden light in the late afternoon. Families who want something with a bit more urban energy often gravitate toward Brooklyn Bridge Park, where the Lower Manhattan skyline creates a dramatic and unmistakably New York backdrop. The DUMBO waterfront, with its cobblestone streets and the Manhattan Bridge framed perfectly between the buildings, has become iconic for a reason — it gives even a casual family session a cinematic quality. In Queens, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park offers wide open green space that feels surprisingly removed from the city, while the Rockaways and Jacob Riis Park are wonderful for families who want that salt-air beach energy on the southern edge of the borough. In Manhattan, Riverside Park along the Hudson is a hidden gem — especially in autumn, when the foliage along the Palisades visible across the water makes for some of the most color-rich images of the year. We're also happy to work in your own neighborhood, whether that's a particular block in Astoria that feels like home, a favorite corner of Fort Greene, or your own apartment and stoop in the West Village. A session that takes place somewhere meaningful to your family will always feel more genuine than one spent somewhere beautiful but unfamiliar.
A Session Built Around How New York Families Actually Live
We know that New York family life doesn't always look like a slow Sunday afternoon with nowhere to be. Between school pickup schedules, soccer in Prospect Park, weekend trips on the subway, and the general beautiful chaos of raising children in one of the world's busiest cities, your family has a pace all its own. Our sessions are designed to work with that energy rather than against it. Sessions run 45 to 90 minutes at a location of your choosing, and we always build in time for snack breaks, a quick outfit change if needed, and the inevitable toddler negotiation. Our approach is play-based and low-pressure. Instead of asking your kids to line up and smile, we create situations where they can run, explore, laugh at something silly, or just be themselves — and we capture what happens naturally. For families with newborns, toddlers, or a mix of ages, this matters a great deal. The images that end up on your walls are almost never the ones where everyone was perfectly still. They're the ones where your six-year-old was mid-sprint and your baby was watching with wide eyes and your partner was laughing at something just off camera. We also offer wardrobe coordination guidance before your session so your family looks cohesive without being matchy-matchy. In New York, where personal style is genuinely part of daily life, we help you put together a color palette and vibe that feels like you — not like a catalog. Every package includes 40 to 75 professionally retouched images delivered in a private online gallery with digital downloads and a full print release.
Timing Your New York Family Session for the Best Light
New York's seasons are dramatic, and each one offers something distinct for family photography. Fall is our most popular season — the foliage in Central Park, Prospect Park, and along the Palisades hits its peak from mid-October through early November, and the cooler air makes outdoor sessions genuinely comfortable after a long, humid summer. The warm amber tones of autumn in a New York park are hard to beat for portrait work. Spring sessions, particularly from late April through May, offer fresh green foliage and blooming cherry blossoms along spots like the Cherry Hill area of Central Park and the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Summer sessions require a bit more planning — the city gets hot and humid, so we often recommend early morning or golden hour evening sessions to avoid the midday heat and harsh overhead light. Winter sessions, particularly around the holiday season, have their own magic — bare trees in the park, soft overcast light that acts as a natural diffuser, and the festive energy of the city all around you. Regardless of season, we always recommend scheduling your session during golden hour — roughly the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset — for the most flattering, warm natural light. In New York, golden hour light bouncing off the Hudson or glowing through a canopy of fall trees is something genuinely special. We'll work with you on timing and logistics so that the light works in your favor on the day of your session.

New York Family Photographer FAQ
For most casual family sessions in New York City parks, a permit is not required — the city generally allows photography for personal use without one. However, if you're bringing additional lighting equipment or planning a very large group gathering, some locations or specific areas within parks may have additional rules. We're familiar with the ins and outs of shooting throughout the city's parks and public spaces, and we'll advise you on any location-specific considerations when we plan your session together.
We recommend thinking about your location as part of your wardrobe planning. If you're shooting in a natural setting like Central Park or Prospect Park, earthy tones, soft neutrals, and rich jewel colors tend to photograph beautifully against greenery and fall foliage. If you're going for a more urban setting like DUMBO or the Brooklyn Bridge Park waterfront, you have a bit more freedom to incorporate bolder styles that feel true to New York's aesthetic. We'll send you a wardrobe guide after booking and are happy to give specific feedback on what you're considering — the goal is a palette that feels cohesive and like yourselves, not like everyone bought the same outfit.
Keeping little ones happy in a busy environment is something we think about carefully. Our play-based approach means we're never asking your kids to stand still and hold a pose — instead, we guide them through activities and interactions that feel natural and fun, so the camera is capturing real reactions rather than forced smiles. In a park setting, that might mean chasing each other through the grass, looking for rocks along a path, or a spontaneous piggyback ride. We also build buffer time into every session for snack breaks and quick resets, because a well-timed snack has saved more than a few sessions.
We recommend booking four to six weeks in advance for most times of year, and earlier if you're hoping for a fall session. October and early November are our busiest weeks of the year across New York — the foliage, the light, and the comfortable temperatures make it the city's most popular season for outdoor portraits, and weekend golden hour slots fill up quickly. Spring blooms are another high-demand window. That said, if you have a more flexible timeline or are hoping for a weekday session, we can often accommodate shorter lead times, so it's always worth reaching out to check availability.
New York weather can be unpredictable, and we plan for it. If there's significant rain or severe weather forecast for your session day, we'll work with you to reschedule at no additional cost. Light overcast skies are actually wonderful for portrait photography — the clouds act as a natural diffuser and eliminate harsh shadows — so we don't cancel for every grey day. We monitor the forecast closely in the days leading up to your session and will communicate with you early if we think a reschedule makes sense, so you're not scrambling at the last minute with a carload of kids in coordinated outfits.
