Elegant maternity portraits that celebrate this chapter
New York Maternity Photography
New York City is one of the most visually dynamic places in the world to document this chapter of your life, and Candid Studios is here to make your maternity session as effortless and meaningful as the city itself. From the quiet green corridors of Central Park to the sun-drenched brownstone blocks of Brooklyn Heights, we know exactly how to find light, space, and beauty in a city that never stops moving. With more than 3,000 events captured since 2016, our photographers bring genuine warmth and an unhurried approach to every session, letting the real connection between you and your growing family take center stage.
Where to Shoot: Our Favorite New York Maternity Locations
Central Park is the cornerstone of outdoor maternity photography in Manhattan, and for good reason. The Conservatory Garden on the Upper East Side offers a formal, bloom-filled backdrop that photographs beautifully in every season, while the Bow Bridge and the Ramble provide that unmistakable mix of weeping willows, soft water reflections, and natural canopy that feels worlds away from the surrounding skyline. Depending on your due date and your personal aesthetic, one corner of the park can feel entirely different from another, and our team knows how to scout them all. Brooklyn offers its own distinct energy. The cobblestone streets and Federal-style townhouses of Brooklyn Heights, the sprawling meadows of Prospect Park, and the wildflower-lined paths of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden give expecting families a more intimate, neighborhood-rooted feel that many of our clients prefer. DUMBO, with its arched brick framing of the Manhattan Bridge, creates an iconic New York image with a slightly editorial edge. For families who want something more personal, in-home sessions in apartments across the Upper West Side, Astoria, or Park Slope let us capture the nursery you spent months putting together, morning light falling across your kitchen table, and the quiet everyday moments that matter just as much as any park backdrop. We are equally at home in a prewar co-op or a modern Tribeca loft. The Hudson River waterfront, including Riverside Park in Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge Park in Dumbo, offers sweeping views and open sky that create a natural, airy quality of light particularly well-suited to the softer, dreamy look many expecting mothers love. We always pre-scout any outdoor location before your session to make the most of the specific light conditions on your day.
Seasons and Timing: What New York's Climate Means for Your Session
New York's four distinct seasons each bring something genuinely different to a maternity session, and choosing the right time of year can shape the entire mood of your gallery. Spring — particularly late April through early June — is our most requested window. The cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the cherry allées in Central Park's east side create a fleeting, otherworldly bloom that many families plan their session around. Spring light in New York is soft and golden in the early evening, and the temperatures are comfortable enough for flowy gowns without any discomfort. Summer sessions take advantage of long golden hours that stretch past 8 p.m., giving us more flexibility around your schedule. The trade-off is that popular outdoor locations like Central Park can be crowded mid-day, which is why we almost always recommend early morning or the last two hours before sunset for warm-weather shoots. The verdant green of the parks at their peak and the warm, directional light makes summer one of our most photogenic seasons. Fall is extraordinary in New York. The foliage in Central Park, Riverside Park, and Prospect Park turns to deep amber and copper from mid-October through early November, and that warm color palette complements virtually every skin tone and wardrobe choice. Many clients who are due in the winter deliberately time their sessions for October so they can take advantage of both the season and a comfortable belly size. Winter sessions, particularly around December and early January, carry a quieter, more intimate energy. Bare trees, soft overcast light, and fewer crowds make spots like the Central Park Mall feel almost private. Indoor and in-home sessions also shine in winter, when natural window light in a cozy apartment can produce some of the most timeless imagery we create all year.
What to Expect From Your Candid Studios Maternity Session
We designed our maternity sessions to feel nothing like a photo shoot and everything like a relaxed, unhurried afternoon focused entirely on you and your family. Our photographers lead with conversation, not posing commands, which means the moments that end up meaning the most are often the ones nobody planned — a laugh between partners, a toddler sibling pressing their ear to a belly, a quiet look downward that says everything without a word. We work with expecting mothers at all stages, though most clients find the sweet spot somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks, when the belly is beautifully round but energy and mobility are still strong. That said, we are completely flexible and have created stunning sessions earlier and later than that range. We will talk through your due date and how you are feeling during our initial consultation and recommend the timing that makes most sense for you. Wardrobe guidance is always included as part of your experience. Whether you envision flowing silk gowns, a casual weekend look, or something polished and studio-styled, we will help you put together combinations that work for your chosen location and the light conditions we expect that day. New York adds its own wardrobe consideration — we always think about comfortable footwear for navigating park paths, and we can suggest locations where you can change comfortably between looks. Every session ends with a carefully edited gallery delivered in an online viewing room where you can review, share, and order prints or albums at your own pace. We believe the photographs from this time in your life deserve to be printed and held, not just saved in a phone camera roll, and we are happy to walk you through heirloom options that will last for generations.

New York Maternity Photography FAQ
For personal photography sessions — meaning no commercial products are being sold and no large crew or equipment is involved — permits are generally not required in New York City parks, including Central Park. However, rules can vary by specific location and are subject to change, so we stay current on NYC Parks Department guidelines and will advise you ahead of your session if any considerations apply to your chosen spot. We handle all of that research so you do not have to.
Honestly, the best neighborhood is wherever you live, because an in-home session is most meaningful when it captures your actual space. That said, apartments with south- or west-facing windows tend to give us the most to work with in terms of natural light. We have done beautiful in-home sessions in prewar Upper West Side apartments, modern Williamsburg lofts, and cozy Queens townhouses. During our consultation we will ask you a few questions about your space and light to make sure we are set up for the best possible results.
Cherry blossom season in Brooklyn typically falls within a two-to-three week window in late April, though the exact peak varies year to year depending on winter temperatures. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden does require a paid entry, and it fills up quickly during bloom season. We recommend booking your session with us at least six to eight weeks in advance if you have a specific seasonal vision in mind, and we will keep an eye on the bloom forecast as your date approaches so we can adjust timing within your session window to hit the best possible conditions.
For most Central Park and Riverside Park sessions, we recommend arriving via subway or rideshare — it is almost always faster and less stressful than dealing with Manhattan street parking, especially on weekends when many families are out. If you are coming from Brooklyn, Queens, or New Jersey, we can suggest session start times that avoid peak traffic windows. We will send you specific meeting-point instructions ahead of time, including the exact park entrance or address we will use, so there is no wandering around with a bump trying to find us.
Absolutely — including a partner, a toddler sibling, or even a beloved dog is something we encourage. Some of the most moving images from any maternity session are the ones that show the whole family in its current form, just before it grows. Adding family members does not change our base session structure, though we do like to know in advance so we can plan enough time and choose a location that works comfortably for everyone, including little ones who may have a limited patience window. Just let us know during booking and we will plan accordingly.
