Denver Family Photography
Denver is a city that lives outdoors — where families spend their weekends hiking through Red Rocks, watching the snow dust the Front Range from a Washington Park bench, or catching the last golden light over City Park's lake. Candid Studios brings that same unhurried, outdoors-in energy to every family photography session we book here, capturing the people you love in the places that actually mean something to your family. With 3,000+ events captured since 2016, we know how to work with real families — the wiggly toddlers, the reluctant teenagers, the dog who refuses to look at the camera — and turn all of it into images you'll genuinely want to hang on your wall.
Denver Locations We Love for Family Sessions
Denver offers a range of backdrops that make family portraits feel alive rather than staged. Washington Park is one of our most-requested settings — the open lawns, mature trees, and lake reflections give you variety within a single session, and the late-afternoon light there in fall is extraordinary. City Park pairs well for families who want that classic Denver skyline visible in the background, with the Rockies rising on the horizon on a clear day. For families who want something wilder, the foothills are close enough to make an easy session location. Chautauqua Park in Boulder is just a short drive and delivers dramatic Flatirons backdrops that feel worlds away from the city. Closer in, Sloan's Lake offers open shoreline, golden-hour water reflections, and enough open space that kids can actually run around between shots without anyone feeling confined. For urban families who love the energy of their neighborhood, we regularly shoot in the RiNo Art District, where the murals and brick walls create bold, colorful backgrounds that photograph beautifully. The Platte River Trail corridor near Confluence Park also gives us a mix of water, greenery, and Denver's downtown skyline — perfect for families who want something distinctly city without losing all sense of nature. If your family has a backyard you love, a favorite trail near Evergreen, or a specific spot in Cheesman Park that holds meaning for you, bring it to us. Some of our favorite Denver sessions happen in places only the family themselves would have thought to suggest.
How a Candid Studios Family Session Actually Works
Sessions run 45 to 90 minutes, and we pace them around your family — not around a rigid shot list. We start with looser, movement-based moments: walking together, exploring the space, the kids chasing each other or showing us something they found on the ground. From there we layer in the group portraits and individual shots. By the time we ask everyone to look at the camera at the same time, even the shyest kid usually has enough momentum to give us something genuine. Before your session, you'll receive our wardrobe coordination guidance — practical suggestions for how to dress a family cohesively without everyone wearing identical outfits. In Denver, that often means thinking through layers, since a session that starts in warm afternoon sun can feel noticeably cooler once the sun drops behind the mountains. We build buffer time into every session for outfit changes, snack breaks, and the inevitable toddler negotiation that needs to happen between shot locations. Every package includes 40 to 75 professionally retouched images delivered through a private online gallery with full digital downloads and a print release. You own your images and can print them wherever and however you like. We recommend scheduling your session during golden hour — roughly an hour before sunset — for the warmest, most flattering natural light Denver's sky reliably delivers, particularly in summer and fall.
Photographing Families in Denver's Seasons
Denver's seasons each bring something genuinely different to family photography, and none of them are off-limits. Fall is our most requested time of year — the cottonwoods and maples along the Platte River and through Washington Park go amber and gold in October, and the light gets that low, warm quality that makes everything look like it belongs in a frame. If fall is on your radar, booking early is strongly recommended because those weeks fill quickly. Summer sessions take advantage of Denver's long evenings — golden hour arrives late, which means a 7:00 p.m. session in June or July has plenty of usable light and comfortable temperatures after the afternoon heat breaks. Spring brings wildflowers to the foothills and a freshness to the city's parks that photographs beautifully, even when the weather requires a bit of flexibility around afternoon storms. Winter sessions are something Denver families sometimes overlook, but a fresh snowfall at City Park or along the foothills creates images that are genuinely unlike anything you can get any other time of year. We plan for the cold and keep sessions moving so no one is standing still long enough to lose feeling in their fingers. The low winter sun in Colorado also produces some of the most dramatic light we work with all year.

Denver Family Photographer FAQ
We photograph families throughout Denver and the surrounding area — popular spots include Washington Park, City Park, Sloan's Lake, the RiNo Art District, and Confluence Park along the Platte River Trail. We also work in the foothills and can travel to Chautauqua Park or Evergreen for families who want a mountain backdrop. If you have a meaningful spot already in mind, we're happy to hear it — some of our best Denver sessions happen at locations the families themselves suggested.
Honestly, every season offers something worth working with. Fall is our most popular window — the foliage along Denver's parks and the Platte River corridor peaks in October and the light is exceptional. Summer evenings are long and warm, making them ideal for golden-hour sessions with young children who have a later bedtime. Winter and spring each have their own character, and we're experienced in working with Denver's variable weather regardless of when you book.
We don't ask kids to stand still and smile — at least not until they're warmed up and having a good time. We start sessions with movement and exploration, letting kids lead us to whatever catches their interest. That natural energy is actually what produces the images families love most. We build snack breaks and small rest moments into the session timeline, and we're experienced enough with toddler timelines to know when to push forward and when to slow down. Bring whatever comfort items or props your child responds to — we work around your family, not the other way around.
We send every family our wardrobe coordination guidance before the session. The general principle is cohesion without matching — think of a palette rather than a uniform. For Denver specifically, we always recommend bringing an extra layer, especially if you're shooting near sunset when the temperature can drop noticeably once the sun clears the mountains. Earth tones, soft neutrals, and muted colors tend to photograph beautifully against Denver's natural backdrops — the greens of the parks, the golden light, the mountains in the distance. We're happy to talk through specific outfits if you'd like a second opinion before your session.
Every family session includes professional coverage by an experienced Candid Studios photographer, expert post-production editing, and a private online gallery with 40 to 75 retouched images. You'll receive full digital downloads and a print release, meaning you're free to print your images anywhere in any size you choose. Sessions run 45 to 90 minutes depending on your package and family size, and we provide wardrobe guidance and location recommendations as part of the booking process.
