Pick one Denver hour: a city garden or park, or a foothills park with a real drive. The film above is Gillian and Chris's wedding at Denver Botanic Gardens. The ceremony frame is their day, not a catalog photo of every park below. Mountain destinations such as Maroon Bells are on the Colorado engagement locations guide, and they are a separate trip.

Explore every recommended location on the map above.

For every photoshoot spot, not only engagements, see Denver photoshoot locations. Hiring lives on Denver photography. The map is the statewide pin list. This page is the Denver short list.

A foothills park is not the second half of a RiNo hour. I-25 at 5 p.m. is not a backdrop.

Key Takeaways

  • Denver Botanic Gardens when you want a garden and you can work with tickets and hours.
  • City Park, Cheesman, or Civic Center for a city hour that does not require a reservation.
  • Union Station or RiNo when the picture is streets and buildings.
  • Roxborough, Lookout Mountain, or Chatfield only when that drive is the plan.

In The City

Denver Botanic Gardens

1007 York St, Denver, CO 80206

The gardens are the Denver session we can show from our own work. Gillian and Chris were married there, and their film is at the top of this page. The still on the card is a frame from that wedding, on the ceremony aisle. Admission applies, and a portrait session may need a permit on top of a ticket. Confirm both, and confirm the closing time, because a garden that locks at dusk is not a sunset location. The York Street garden is the hour. Chatfield is not the encore.

City Park

2001 Colorado Blvd, Denver, CO 80205

The lake, the museum, and a big lawn east of downtown. It is the free version of a Denver hour when the botanic gardens are booked or closed. Geese and weekend picnics are part of the park. Work one side of the lake. The pavilion and the skyline reflection are the frames. It pairs with nothing in the foothills. Cheesman is the more formal lawn to the south if City Park is hosting an event.

Cheesman Park

E 8th Ave and Humboldt St, Denver, CO

A lawn, a pavilion, and the skyline to the west. The pavilion is also a wedding venue of its own. See the pavilion at Cheesman Park if that is the question. For an engagement hour, the lawn and the pavilion steps are enough. Sunset points at the city. It is a Capitol Hill session. It is a bad idea to leave here for Lookout Mountain and expect the same light.

Civic Center

Civic Center Park, Denver, CO

The amphitheater, the City and County Building, and the capitol axis. It is formal and it is public, which means events and security perimeters some days. If a festival has the park, walk to the library steps or reschedule rather than inventing a tour of downtown. Use it when you want Denver to look like a city, in good light, on a day the park is actually open to you.

Union Station

1700 Wewatta St, Denver, CO 80202

The great hall and the plaza. Interiors depend on what the station allows that day, so the reliable pictures are outside: the sign, the benches, and Wynkoop. You are in a working station. Keep the session on the plaza and the nearby streets. Larimer Square is a short walk and the historic-block version of the same hour. Do the station or the square as the focus, and do not add a park across town.

Larimer Square

1430 Larimer St, Denver, CO 80202

A block of historic buildings and lights. It is small. The pictures are the street and the alley light, and then you are done or you walk to Union Station. Evenings are when it looks like itself. Midday is a bright street with deliveries. This is the downtown hour for people who do not want a lake or a garden.

River North Art District

River North Art District, Denver, CO

Murals on warehouse walls, mostly along Blake and Walnut. The walls change, and some of them are private property up to the sidewalk. Stay on the public side and pick a few walls within a few blocks. RiNo is the color session. It is dusty and it is not a formal garden. A white outfit and a brick wall is a choice. A white outfit and then the botanic gardens is two sessions.

Four Mile Historic Park

715 S Forest St, Denver, CO 80246

A farmhouse and open ground in southeast Denver. It is the quiet city option when parks feel too finished and downtown feels too loud. Hours apply. Confirm them, and confirm that a portrait session is welcome. It is not a long drive, but it is not next to RiNo either. Treat it as the destination.

Metro Edges And Foothills

The Hudson Gardens & Event Center

6115 S Santa Fe Dr, Littleton, CO 80120

Gardens along the river in Littleton. Admission and event calendars both matter. A Saturday wedding on the grounds is not your engagement session. Confirm the day. This is the south-metro garden hour, closer than the mountains and more planted than Chatfield. It replaces the botanic gardens for people who live south. It does not follow a downtown session.

Bluff Lake

Bluff Lake Nature Center, Denver, CO 80239

Prairie, a lake, and a skyline that is far enough away to be a skyline. The refuge has hours and rules about staying on trail. Read them. It is the northeast Denver hour when you want grass and water without a mountain drive. More on the place itself is on Bluff Lake Nature Center. It is not a quick stop before the airport and also not a quick stop after Civic Center.

Roxborough State Park

4751 Roxborough Dr, Littleton, CO 80125

Red rock fins south of the city. A state parks pass or day fee applies. Confirm the current rule for a portrait session, and do not assume a trailhead is a permit. The rocks are the picture within a short walk of the visitor center if you do not want a hike. This is a foothills session. Leave time for the drive back to dinner. The light on the rocks is the reason to be there at the end of the day, which means you started the drive earlier than feels reasonable.

Lookout Mountain

Lookout Mountain, Golden, CO 80401

The Denver view from the west, at Buffalo Bill's grave and the overlooks along the road. Wind, a narrow road, and a parking lot that fills at sunset. This is the "we want the city from above" hour. It is not a stop on the way home from downtown unless home is already in Golden. Go up early. The last car into the lot is not a session.

Bear Creek Lake Park

15600 W Morrison Rd, Lakewood, CO 80228

A lake and foothills in Lakewood, with a park entrance fee. Confirm it. The marina and the open shore are two different pictures. Pick one parking area. It is the west-metro water hour, easier than a mountain pass and more of a drive than City Park. Chatfield is the larger reservoir to the south and the same kind of decision. One lake.

Chatfield State Park

11500 N Roxborough Park Rd, Littleton, CO 80125

Water, prairie, and a long view of the foothills. A state park fee applies. The park is big. Choose the swim beach area, the marina, or a single trailhead. This is the south session when you want space. It is also where people lose an hour driving the park road. Roxborough's rocks are nearby on a map and far enough in traffic that they are the other option, not the second location.

Session Timing

Start about an hour before sunset. In summer that is late, and a foothills drive has to be done before it. In winter the sun is gone by late afternoon, and a garden with hours beats an overlook you cannot see. Afternoon storms in the mountains are a reason to keep the city backup in the same part of town, not a reason to invent a second drive.

If your wedding is booked and the package includes an engagement session, request a date in the client portal. We confirm it against your photographer's calendar. Nothing books itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Denver engagement photo spots?

For a garden, Denver Botanic Gardens. For a free city park, City Park or Cheesman. For streets, Union Station or RiNo. For red rocks without a mountain expedition, Roxborough. Pick one.

Do we need a permit in Denver?

At the botanic gardens, state parks, and some event sites, yes. City parks vary. We check the place you choose. A single answer for all of Denver would be wrong.

When is the best season?

Late spring through early fall for the gardens and the foothills. Winter works in the city when you want the skyline and you are dressed for it. July afternoons are harsh. Use the morning or the last hour of the day.
