Vizcaya is an early-1900s Italian Renaissance estate on Biscayne Bay in Miami's Coconut Grove, and it is one of the few venues in South Florida where the architecture, the gardens, and the water all photograph as strongly as each other. As photographers, the challenge here is choosing which of the three to build the day around.
Ceremonies can happen in the formal gardens among clipped hedges and stone fountains, in the open-air Courtyard of the Main House, at the small Tea House pavilion tucked into the greenery for intimate ceremonies, or on the stone barge, an ornate structure built to look like a floating vessel just offshore in Biscayne Bay. The barge is the signature shot: boats drift past in the background and the water opens up behind the couple with nothing blocking the horizon.
Vizcaya rents only in the evening, from 6:30 to 11 p.m., which changes how we plan the whole timeline. Rather than chasing daylight through a long reception, we build the ceremony and portraits around sunset itself. The light over the bay softens fast in that last hour, turning the water gold and then a deep blue, and it is the best natural light the property offers all day. We keep portraits on the barge or the East Terrace tight to that window, because it does not last.
Receptions move to the Main House interiors, which hold up to 100 seated guests among original 1916 architectural details, or the East Terrace overlooking the bay, which holds up to 300 and keeps the water visible through dinner and dancing. Smaller receptions can also stay in the Courtyard of the Main House. Whichever room the couple chooses, we treat the terrace doors as a second location: even after the ceremony light is gone, the terrace's uplighting against the dark bay makes for some of the most striking reception frames of the night.
Because Vizcaya is a historic museum property, it requires vendors from its own approved list and does not handle catering directly, so the timeline tends to be tightly run. That works in our favor: we know roughly when cocktail hour starts and can plan portrait windows around it instead of guessing. Humidity and afternoon thunderstorms are part of any Miami wedding, so we always keep a covered fallback in mind for the gardens, even on a forecast that looks clear.
Because the whole event runs in one evening window, we plan the photo schedule almost minute by minute rather than leaving open blocks. Getting-ready photos usually happen off-site or in a nearby hotel beforehand, since Vizcaya's rental hours start at 6:30, which means the couple is dressed and ready to walk into golden hour the moment the gates open rather than spending the best light on preparation shots.
